Cannabis and Diazepam found in bloodstream

A blood sample taken from a 23-year-old man arrested for a drunk-in-charge offence showed that he also had cannabis and Diazepam in his system.

Gary Damien Scullion, North Street, Lurgan, was banned from driving for six months last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

He was also fined £200 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for being drunk in charge of a vehicle on June 3 last year.

Scullion appeared in court by way of videolink from Maghaberry prison.

A public prosecutor said that shortly after 10pm at Drumgor Heights police found the defendant sitting in the driver’s seat of a car. The keys of the car were found on him

There was a smell of alcohol on his breath and his eyes were glazed.

In custody an evidential breath test gave a reading of 42 and Scullion was given the option of providing a blood sample. The blood sample gave a reading of 94 but also showed that there was Diazepam and cannabis in his system.

A barrister representing Scullion said he had appealed against a sentence but this had been re-affirmed on January 1 and he was just beginning to serve his sentence.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said there was a driving without due care and attention offence on the defendant’s record but there were also more serious matters in his previous convictions.
