Carrick service reservoir gets £180k upgrade

Representing an investment of around £180,000, the essential programme of improvement works has recently been completed.

It is part of an overall £2.4 million programme in 2014/15 to improve service reservoirs throughout Northern Ireland, ensuring operational effectiveness, compliance to drinking water regulations and continuity of supply in the area served.

Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy said: “This programme of work demonstrates NI Water’s ongoing commitment to maintain and improve our service reservoirs, whilst employing industry best practice with regards to reservoir management.”

New stainless steel access ladders with non-slip rungs were installed to ensure safe access and egress for personnel at North Road East, NI Water told the TIMES.

Michael Kennedy, NI Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “We continue to review all our sites on an ongoing basis in order to implement the latest water quality compliance, safety and security measures.

“The refurbishment works will maintain the operational, structural and safety conditions at each site.”

Mr Kennedy went on to outline examples of the general refurbishment and improvements including concrete repairs, waterproofing to walls, floors and columns, internal and external reservoir joints sealed with bandaging system, repair/replacement of internal pipe work and other general repairs to the structure of the reservoirs.

BSG Civil Engineering was the contractor for the scheme with Capita providing project management and construction, design and management co-ordinator services.

Earlier this year, more robust security measures were implemented at Lough Mourne reservoir after animal carcasses were dumped near the site. It is an impounding reservoir, but North Road East is a service reservoir and at appraisal stage, no additional security measures were identified as being required as part of the essential works programme, NI Water explained.
