The planned visit will help promote an economic summit organised by his wife, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, scheduled to take place on October 19 in Washington DC.

US economic envoy to NI Declan Kelly announced the visit earlier this month saying Mr Clinton retained "a passionate interest in NI" and wanted to help improve its economic situation.

Mr Clinton's itinerary has not yet been formalised but this paper understands he will pay a visit to Londonderry over September 29 - September 30 to honour the contribution of former SDLP leader John Hume to the peace process.
