Councillor Cole sweet on Nectar Cafe project!

A delighted councillor Cole said: “As many people know I have a passion for wildlife and have used my year as Mayor amongst other things, to further the wildlife conservation of the Borough.

“Having hosted conservation awards in recognition of the huge contribution of those who do their bit for conservation, I also supported the launch of Council’s new Local Biodiversity Action Plan. “I have been working closely with Council’s Parks department and Biodiversity Officer to create a nectar café, aiming to provide nectar rich flowers for our bees and butterflies.”

Paul Jess, Parks Services Manager, commented “Many visitors and residents have been wondering what’s been going on with the two areas at Killowen, towards the old bridge. The Parks Team have removed the grass in two areas and planted a recommended mix of flowers, specifically to provide nectar for insects while showing a colourful display for everyone to enjoy. “

Paul added: “Over the next few months the flowers should emerge into a colourful display alive with butterflies, bees and other insects, so watch this space!”

Rachel Bain, Biodiversity Officer for Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady and Moyle Councils added: “Our insect populations have suffered serious declines in recent years for various reasons, primarily due to the lack of nectar. This is a wonderful way of giving our insects a helping hand!

“Everyone can help by creating their own nectar café and planting some nectar rich plants in their garden, window boxes, or pots. Plants such as lavender, veronica, candytuft and buddleia are an excellent source.”

Councillor Cole, who was succeeded last week by councillor David Harding as the new mayor of the borough, added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my year as Mayor for the Borough of Coleraine, and hope this nectar café pilot project continues, with nectar cafes popping up throughout the Borough”.
