Councillors voice concerns over Gaelectric plans

Dublin-based company Gaelectric wants to build a £300m compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility – only the third of its kind anywhere in the world – at Carnduff, on the outskirts of the town.

Plans for the project have almost been finalised, and Gaelectric hopes to submit its application by the end of August or early September.

Despite several rounds of public consultation, DUP councillors Gregg McKeen and Rev Paul Reid have said they still have strong reservations regarding the proposal.

In a joint statement, the Larne Lough representatives listed their objections to the facility, highlighting a range of concerns.

The statement said: “We are of the opinion the sheer visual impact of the development on the landscape is not in keeping with the local area.

“The transportation structures are not in place to facilitate the proposal, and the risks to the marine environment could potentially be very high.

“This is coupled with the noise increase, which will have an huge impact on the peaceful environment.”
