Meanwhile, the security alert in Ballykelly, which resulted in the evacuation of a number of homes and lasted from last night until this morning, has been declared an ‘elaborate hoax.’

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “The security alert at the Carnamuff Road, Ballykelly has now ended. ATO (army technical officers) have finished at the scene and the alert has been declared an elaborate hoax. Two objects have been removed for further forensic examination.

“Enquiries are continuing and police would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Carnamuff Road area over the last few days to contact police at Limavady 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
