Extradited to face terror charges

A 24 year old man, extradited from the Irish Republic, appeared in Craigavon Magistrates Court on terror offences linked to the discovery of a live mortar bomb in Lurgan in 2007.

Ryan McKenna from Lurgan had been living in Cross, Co Mayo when he was arrested by gardai in September last year. He had been under surveillance by a covert military unit for six months.

His extradition was requested in relation to terror offences linked to the discovery of a live mortar on the Cornakinnegar Road near St Michael’s School on March 29, 2007.

Three others have been jailed in connection with the mortar find. Damien McKenna, 26, Deans Walk, Gary Toman, 24, Drumnahoe Avenue and Sean McConville, 23, Kilwilkie Road, all in Lurgan, pleaded guilty at Belfast Crown Court in September 2009.

Police said they believed the trio were members of the Continuity IRA. They said the mortar was designed to be fired horizontally into a passing police or Army vehicle.
