The post has opened up a discussion on the merits of the current rules that means R drivers in Northern Ireland are restricted to 45mph.

"If only us driving instructors could teach them to drive safely at 70mph like the rest of the world. Then hopefully they wouldn't go out trying to show off,” said one person.

Another voiced the opinion that the current speed limit for anyone on R plates was dangerous.

"Prime example of the R plate restriction to 45mph being a hazard on the motorway is the M3 slip to M2 Northbound in Belfast, they are joining in lane 4 at 45 mph and then have to cut three lanes of traffic to prevent people from undertaking,” said one man.

And another said: “A new driver going 45 mph while everyone is doing 70 makes them more nervous as they feel they are holding everyone up.”

However, some also felt that despite the discussion, R drivers still had a responsibility to observe the rules of the road.

“A Restricted driver reported for grossly exceeding the limit for the terms of their licence, will be more out of pocket as their insurance cost increases as a result of points added when insurance renewal due. Drive in accordance with your driver's licence, to ensure clean driving record, and lower insurance premiums. Speeding is just not worth It. Slow down, stay safe and alive!” added another person.
