Customers’ small change makes a big difference

DO you believe that small change can make a big difference? The staff and customers of Dobbies Garden World in Lisburn certainly do, having raised a magnificent £1,021.44 by donating their change to the RSPB via the charity’s pin badge box, displayed at the store’s checkouts.

Pin badge volunteer, David Gourley explained: “Since I placed the pin badge box at Dobbies in March last year the support and generosity of customers and staff alike has been tremendous. In addition to being a pin badge minder I also volunteer at local RSPB reserve Portmore Lough so I have seen first hand how the nature around us has benefited thanks to funds raised through the pin badge scheme.”

Dobbies Garden World Manager, Stephen Gibson said they were ‘thrilled’ to have raised more than £1000.

Last year the RSPB raised over £25,000 through the sale of its pin badges. This was done thanks to a Northern Ireland-wide network of volunteers who looked after pin badge boxes, replenishing them when stock is low and collecting the money regularly.

The little metal, ceramic and enamel badges come in many designs including all the favourite birds, wildlife and even wild flowers. They are available to people who make a donation in return, which enables the RSPB to carry out essential conservation work in Northern Ireland.

Senior Community Fundraising Officer for the RSPB, Laura Thomson said, “We are currently hoping to introduce more of these lovely little badges across the province, but we need your help. Could you spare a few minutes a month to mind a box in an outlet near you? These sites don’t have to have an obvious connection with wildlife.”
