‘Da’ attends successful peace money event

ACTOR and comedian Tim McGarry took part in a recent Londonderry conference celebrating the North West PEACE III Partnership’s success to date in tackling sectarianism and racism across the North West.

The Bridge to the Future event was organised by the North West PEACE III Partnership, in association with the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) and NW Youth Forum for Peace & Reconciliation.

It provided the opportunity to assess and celebrate the impact of £4.733m funding distributed across the North West during Phase I of the NW PEACE III programme from 2009 – 2011, financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

Eileen McFarline, Chairperson of the NW PEACE III Partnership said: “Our youth groups and community workers did us proud by getting involved in the creative workshops and by performing later on the stage.

“We felt privileged to hear Richard Moore speak so emotionally and entertainingly, and Tim Mc Garry kept the tone light and enjoyable.

“This event has really demonstrated the difference the funding has made and the positive impacts it has created for communities and individuals across the North West. We look forward to the next phase and have no doubt that it will prove to be as successful.”

Lynsey Cathcart, Youth Officer for Social Inclusion, WELB, said: “This event has been both an excellent evaluation and showcase event for all who have been involved in the North West PEACE III programme. From young performers upwards, there was a sense of celebration and inclusivity for all our projects.”

The main showcase event was led by the Hole in the Wall Gang actor and comedian Tim Mc Garry and the keynote speaker was local peace activist and charity founder, Richard Moore, who spoke of his personal journey and provided his reflections on forgiveness.

Local singer/songwriter Paddy Nash performed an original song with delegates and a poetry recital was given by the Poetry Chicks, both of which reflected the views of those in attendance on the difference NW PEACE III funding had made. A dance was performed by members of SEEDS and ‘Tonnes’ poetry was delivered by community and youth forum representatives.
