Ian is honoured by Queen

CROSSFIRE Trust Director Ian Bothwell, no stranger to Lurgan, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Mr Bothwell, who preaches regularly at High Street Presbyterian Church, was recognised for 30 years of service to the people of south Armagh.

Ian set up the Crossfire Trust as a registered charity which cares for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the people, primarily in South Armagh.

It was established in 1984 by four Trustees who had considerable experience volunteering in Crossmaglen and who wanted to develop further the links Ian Bothwell had made in the area since 1978.

“It is a great honour to receive this award and I can only thank all those who have supported Crossfire Trust over the years, especially my wife Pauline who has stood by me through the good and bad times” Ian said.

Ian also paid tribute to the huge support he has received from the people of Lurgan who have collected a huge amount of clothes over the years for the charity shop.

He also applauded the Emmanuel Church and the YMCA and in particular George Emerson who he said had been a great listening ear offering sound advice over the years.

He said it was sometimes hard to bridge the gap, especially with victims.

“With an award like this there comes an affirmation that what we are doing is worthwhile,” said Mr Bothwell.

“And the people of Lurgan have been a steady boat when things get rough,” he said.
