Declan Grimes of Campion Court admitted committing the offences on August 16.

The court was told that while he was receiving treatment, he threatened to stab a man and slit his throat.

District Judge Barney McElholm sentenced him to three months in prison.

Judge McElholm said it was becoming prevalent for young men to carry knives and that they were used all too often.

He said there were those who believed that anyone carrying a knife should receive an immediate, lengthy sentence.

"I can understand that view point," he said, "but it is not my place to comment on policy matters."
