Low turnover of staff leaving through natural wastage

THE leaving rate of staff through natural wastage - excluding those leaving due to voluntary redundancy - was lower in the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT) than in any other health authority in Northern Ireland over the past three years.

The leaving rate - based on the headcount of permanent staff in WHSCT leaving as a percentage of average permanent staff in post - was 5.21 per cent in 2007/8, 4.02 per cent in 2008/9 and 3.39 per cent in 2009/10.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey revealed the level of staff turnover in response to an Assembly Question.

The figures exclude bank staff, temporary staff, staff on career breaks, rotational doctors in training and staff with a whole-time equivalent of 0.03 or less.

Rates also exclude staff leaving due to voluntary redundancy, but include staff taking voluntary early retirement (some of which may be on the grounds of redundancy).
