Man sentenced to jail after third disorderly offence

A man who admitted disorderly behaviour in William Street has been sentenced to seven months in prison.

Brendan McAlinden, of Ballynamoney Road, Lurgan, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The 43-year-old was already the subject of two suspended sentences.

A prosecution lawyer told the court that police spoke to the defendant around 2.10am on February 7 this year, and warned about his behaviour. When asked for his name, he replied “Mickey Mouse”.

McAlinden’s lawyer said his client’s actions were the result of alcohol.

District Judge Bernie Kelly said the defendant had only sought medical help a couple of days before he was due to be sentenced. “While alcohol is a feature, it’s not the biggest. That is your negative attitude to police, which is outlined in the Probation report. You are in breach of two suspended sentences, all for the same offence,” said the judge.

She sentenced him to seven months in prison and a £25 offender’s levy. McAlinden was released on his own bail of £350, and a surety of £1,000. A curfew was also imposed.
