Mid Ulster motorists warned over dodgy part-worn tyres

The warning comes from Mid Ulster District Council which is joining a national campaign to raise awareness of the possible dangers of using part-worn tyres which often do not meet the minimum standards required and can be unsafe.

In a 2014 survey across Northern Ireland to assess the compliance of part-worn tyre retailers with the Motor Vehicle Tyre (Safety) Regulations 1994, 10% were found to have serious faults which would potentially affect their safety.

While an improvement on the results of the 2013 survey which showed that 35% of part-worn tyres had serious faults which would potentially affect their safety, there is still a need for caution, according to the Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Christine McFlynn.

She said: “Part-worn tyres are an attractive option financially, but anyone who chooses to buy them should be careful and make sure that they know what to look for in terms of labelling, tread depths and damage.

“For their part, sellers must take positive steps to ensure that their stock meets the requirements of the regulations and ensure that all relevant staff are made aware of these requirements”.
