MLAs give update on railway link

THE Coleraine to Londonderry railway line will be closed for 12 months to facilitate major works on the route, according to MLAs.

The local MLAs gave an update on the local railway line at Monday’s meeting of Portstewart Vision the Community Forum in Portstewart Town Hall.

MP Gregory Campbell, who also attended the meeting, said that the upgrade of the line had been an “ongoing saga” since 2001. He said it was working towards a more significant upgrade “but it won’t be tomorrow”.

Billy Leonard MLA said that work to relay the track will begin in April 2012 and finish the following year. This will require the track to be closed for 12 months.

David McClarty MLA told the meeting that the work represented an 70 million investment in the future of the line.

John Dallat MLA told the meeting that more people now travel on the Coleraine to Derry railway line than travel on the Belfast to Dublin cross-border route.

MP Gregory Campbell also urged local senior citizens to make the most of their Senior Smart passes and to continue to use the railway line.
