Murdered Syrian man had been living in Carrick

A man who was stabbed to death in Belfast city centre on Sunday night is believed to have been living in Carrickfergus.

Hazem Ahmed Ghreir, aged in his 30s, was attacked at Downshire Place in the Great Victoria Street area.

He was a Syrian national.

Police have stated that the murder is not being treated as a “hate crime” and do not believe that race was a factor.

The incident is believed to have occurred at 10.45 pm.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and was taken to Musgrave Police Station in Belfast for questioning.

Police are continuing to appeal for information.
