Newsagent backs little Oscar’s brave fight

Three-year-old Oscar Knox from the Hightown area is battling an aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma and his family are campaigning to raise the £250,000 needed to send him abroad for vital life-saving treatment.

Oscar has received treatment at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. However, he will have to travel to either Germany or the United States to receive the care he needs.

Diane Mullen, who runs McMillen’s newsagents in Glengormley, has organised a charity walk for Sunday, September 9, to help support the Oscar Knox Appeal.

Diane said: “Oscar is a Newtownabbey boy. He lives in Glengormley, right on our doorstep, so we just wanted to do something to help.

“His nanny is a customer of mine and when I heard about his story my heart just melted.

“The appeal is something that a lot of people in Glengormley, and right across Newtownabbey have joined together to support and myself, along with Alastair Hall at Mortgage IQ, and my husband Rab, wanted to organise this walk for Oscar.

“For a three-year-old he has been through a lot and been so brave about it.”

The walk starts from the Portside Inn at Duncrue from 11.30am and will follow the towpath to Loughshore Park.

A bus will be provided to bring those taking part back to the Portside Inn.

Diane added: “The Portside has agreed to put on a buffet for us and there will be all sorts of family fun to be had after the walk, including face painting and balloon modelling. Hopefully it will be a massive day, so we would encourage people to come along even if they can’t take part in the walk.”
