Notorious bridge between Cookstown and Stewartstown to be repaired

REPAIRS to the stonework of Tullywiggan Bridge are to be carried out as a matter of priority, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Regional Development (DRD).

The announcement comes after the MAIL was contacted by a local motorist who reported that damage had been caused to the bridge, which lies on a notorious bend on the main road between Cookstown and Stewartstown.

While work to repair the stonework on the bridge will be carried out, the DRD said it had no plans at present to widen this stretch of the Tullywiggan Road.

A statement issued by the DRD said: “Following recent vehicular damage to the parapet at Tullwiggan Bridge on the B520 between Stewartstown and Cookstown, Transport NI has carried out an assessed the damage.

“Repairs are being scheduled as a priority to reinstate the damage to the stonework of the bridge.

“There are no plans at present to widen this section of the Tullywiggan Road.”

The motorist who contacted the MAIL to report the incident described the section of the road as “an accident blackspot”.

The local man said there had been numerous calls for the Tullywiggan Road to be widened in order to accomodate the heavy traffic which uses it.
