Children’s ‘lucky ducks’ boosts Mayor’s charity

The traditional Duck Derby held at the Lagan Valley LeisurePlex has once again made a great splash for charity.

Children from across the city, who attended the annual summer scheme, bought their ‘Lucky Ducks’, named and decorated them to race in the LeisurePlex’s lazy river.

‘Lily’ proved to be the luckiest duck of all as it bolted to the finishing line beating all competition at a record speed to claim gold.

Second and third were a lot closer with ’Billy Bob’ clinching the silver place and ‘Marvin‘ securing bronze.

Cash prizes were presented to Katie O’Connor, Oliver Brotherton and Sean Whelan who were the owners of the fastest ducks.

All the money was donated to the Mayor’s Charity, ‘the Lagan Valley Diabetes Fund.’

Through her fundraising efforts the Mayor, Councillor Margaret Tolerton intends to raise money to provide support to local residents who have diabetes.

She said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved - all the staff who organised the Duck Derby and especially the young people. This was a fun-filled way to raise money for my charity and may I congratulate all the winners and thank everybody who took part on the day.”

Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, Alderman Paul Porter, said: “It is great to see so many children taking part in the Council’s summer schemes.

“The Council actively promotes physical exercise and healthy living in our youth and the ‘Summer in the City’ schemes that operate right across the Council area are perfect opportunity for children to be active, healthy and happy.”
