PSNI step up patrols to deal with stone-throwers

POLICE in Limavady have announced they are putting on “extra patrols” to try and deal with the spate of stone throwing going on in the town.

A spokesperson for the PSNI also announced that they would be “treating this very seriously” after another round of stone throwing took place on Easter Monday (April 1, 2013).

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Police in Limavady are investigating damage caused to the window of a taxi passing along the Ballyquin Road at the Coolessan shops just after 10pm on April 1st. This is one of several incidents reported to police in recent days involving a small group of young people throwing stones.

“This behaviour poses a risk not only to drivers but to pedestrians and those carrying out the attacks. If a driver loses control of his vehicle because he or she cant see out of the window then there is a very real that someone will get seriously hurt or killed.”

Writing on the Limavady PSNI facebook page, a police spokesperson added: “It’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt. We have extra patrols in the area and are treating this very seriously with regards to the safety of road users. If you see anyone carrying out these reckless acts report it to us so we can deal with the offenders robustly. We cannot be everywhere and urge you and the community to assist us in putting a stop to this reckless behaviour.”
