He urged anyone with information about the incident at Stoney Hill in the early hours of Saturday morning to inform police, adding that there was “a fair amount of damage” to the facility used by Carnlough Swifts FC and the local camogie team.

The councillor added: “I will be urging the council to investigate what it can do to get this important local facility up and running again. This has happened just after the football club paid its league affiliation fees, but if they don’t have changing rooms they may have to play their home against elsewhere.

“It’s a shame because the club has ambitious plans for a 3G pitch and permanent facilities. This is a cross-community facility, with players from both Carnlough and Glenarm playing for the team, and I would hope that this act of mindless vandalism will not be allowed to hamper their plans in any way.”
