Over 500 fireworks seized in Coalisland

MORE than 500 fireworks have been seized by police in Coalisland.

Meanwhile, the PSNI has confirmed that firefighters were attacked when fireworks were thrown at them on Quarry Lane in Dungannon.

The revelations came as police across F District reported receiving more than 60 calls in relation to fireworks nuisances at Hallowe’en.

In a period between noon on Wednesday and 6am on Thursday, a total of 65 fireworks incidents were reported to police.

This total comprised 23 in Cookstown; 19 in Dungannon; 12 in Omagh and 11 in Fermanagh.

Police made 20 seizures of fireworks and cautioned a number of youths for possession of fireworks. Several were taken home to their parents.

The single biggest seizure was in Coalisland where 504 fireworks were found, while in Coagh officers found 200 fireworks in a car.

In Dungannon’s area, 38 bangers were seized in Clogher.

Meanwhile, fireworks were thrown at firefighters at Quarry Lane in Dungannon.

The number of calls received by police showed a decrease this year compared to 2011, when 100 were received on Halloween night.

In that same period in 2011, police made 17 fireworks seizures.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were extremely active in all part of the district, as they had been in the weeks beforehand. We believe this contributed to the reduction in the number of incidents.”
