Principal praises staff and pupils for hard work

The principal of Monkstown Community School has expressed disappointment at this year’s GCSE results - but welcomed the “huge improvement” in the school’s A Level grades.

Mr Nigel Pell-Ilderton, who took over as headmaster at the Bridge Road school in autumn 2011, commented: “We are disappointed in our GCSE results given the huge efforts of all staff and pupils over the last year. The actual percentages are down on our results in 2012. Nevertheless, there are some outstanding results in art and ICT.”

He added: “On a more positive note, our results at A Level were a huge improvement on previous years, with a majority of pupils achieving three grades at C or above.

“We congratulate all our pupils on their hard work and wish them well for the future.

“We are confident that the strategies we have put in place will lead to sustained improvement in the future as we move to amalgamate with Newtownabbey Community High School.”

Monkstown Community School and Newtownabbey Community High School are due to merge under plans brought forward by the North Eastern Education and Library Board.

If the proposal gets ministerial approval, the new school could be operational by September 2014.
