Recycling lessons from Deputy Mayor

The Borough Council is encouraging children to embrace important elements of recycling and Councillor Gaston lent a hand when pupils from Ballymena Primary School undertook a special outdoor classroom session on recycling.

The al fresco lesson involved entertaining explanations from Mid and East Antrim Borough Recycling Officer, Barry Tapster, about the vital role of ‘wriggling worms’ in the composting process.

Speaking afterwards, Cllr Gaston said:“It is vitally important for the future that our young people are aware of the how to recycle even the most unlikely items, such as apple cores, and making it a fun subject at the same time.

“It was great to see how much the children really got into this and it is clear they are now much more aware of the benefits of recycling their left-over food items.

“I would also like to remind people that a ready supply of compost – made from such items as are now being collected and composted by Ballymena Primary School, is available every day in the Recycling Centre at Ballymena Household Recycling Centre. Just bring a bag!” Cllr. Gaston said.

Ballymena Primary School Co-Principal Kerry Simpson praised Mr Tapster’s enthusiasm and welcomed the associated visit by the Arc21 Recycling Bus and the whole range of lessons pupils enjoyed on recycling activities.
