Residents express concern following road accident

RESIDENTS opposed to a plan to develop a chicken waste incinerator in the Glenavy area have said that an accident last week illustrates the dangers of lorries using roads that are not designed for such a volume of traffic.

They also questioned whether the rural roads would be able to cope with an increase in heavy vehicles if the development was given the go ahead.

“This stretch of the road is very popular with walkers, cyclist, and children going to and home from school,” said Ray Clarke, Chairman of the Communities Against Lough Neagh Incinerator (CALNI) campaign group.

“The accident happened about 5pm and it is a miracle that no one was injured. Is this the correct place to put a £100m incinerator?”

Local councillor, James Tinsley, said he understood the concerns of local residents. “If the scheme is given the go ahead and engineers believe the roads need to be improved than that must be done” he said.

“This accident shows that bigger lorries on the road mean there is more chance of accidents.”
