River Foyle: Woman’s body found

The body of a woman has been recovered from the River Foyle in Londonderry.

Volunteers from Foyle Search and Rescue were tasked to the scene after receiving reports that someone had entered the water at around 1am on Saturday.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released by police, though it is believed she’s from the east bank.

A statement from Foyle Search and Rescue said its teams were tasked “at 0130 after receiving reports that a person may have entered the river from the Foyle Bridge. Our teams commenced an extensive search of the entire area until 0545. No one was found. We were in the process of commencing another search of the area shortly after midday, when we were tasked by PSNI to an area below the Foyle Bridge to recover the body of a female.

“Our deepest sympathies and heart felt condolences go to the family and friends that have been bereaved by this sad tragedy.”
