Road closed as Carnlough hit by flooding

On Friday, Main Street in the village was closed to traffic when waves breached the sea wall, covering roads in debris including stones and driftwood from the beach.

Locals reported that the water level at the harbour was close to being level with the footpath, and there were real fears that properties could be flooded.

Coast Road Councillor James McKeown told the Larne Times: “Preparations had been made by both Larne Borough Council and Road Service with sand bags being laid and they did a really good job.

“But we are waiting to see what happens on Saturday and Sunday, when more high tides are predicted.”

Motorists were diverted away from the village on Friday, with diversions put in place at the junction of Ballymena Road and Coast Road, Glenariff, as well as the junction of Bay Road and Ballymena Road, Carnlough.

But Cllr McKeown added: “The worst thing police could have done was to tell drivers to avoid the Coast Road, as people then decided to head in that direction to see what was happening.”
