Road closures in area as rain battered Province

Throughout Friday, the region battled with extreme weather conditions after the MET Office issued an amber alert urging people to be prepared for downpours.

Both the Roads Service and PSNI have warned motorists to drive with due care as the rain showed no sign of stopping.

In the Glens of Antrim, the Glendun River burst its banks and made the Clady Road at Cushendun unpassable.

Elsewhere in the county, the Greenfield Road is closed due to the Kellswater River flooding the area.

In Co Londonderry, the Curragh Road, Newmills Road and Glenleary Road - all in the Coleraine area - were closed.

The Agivey River burst its banks, also, causing a road closure at Bushtown Hotel, on the Drumcroone Road.

This also caused the Agivey Road to close at Agivey Bridge which is around three miles from Garvagh in the direction of the Curragh Road.

A spokesperson for the Road Service said: “Those roads closed due to flooding from adjacent rivers are likely to remain closed for some time until the river levels drop.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling especially in the north and east of the province.”

NI Water said they have responded to a number of incidents relating to sewer flooding.

On Friday afternoon, they had received 63 reports of blocked sewers, 48 reports of external flooding and five of internal flooding.

A statement said: “Every effort has made to alleviate the flooding in the affected areas as quickly as possible and assist with the clean-up operation.”
