Roundabout beingconsidered fornotorious junction

ONE of the most notorious junctions in the rural Lisburn area could soon be replaced with a new roundabout.

A route improvement study has identified that as the preferred option to improve Temple crossroads where the Lisburn to Saintfield Road crosses the main Belfast to Ballynahinch road (A24) outside Carryduff..

Lagan Valley MLA Paul Givan and Downshire Councillor Paul Stewart say the Roads Service has told them a feasibility design brief for the preferred option of a roundabout and widening of the A24 and adjoining Saintfield Road has been sent to a consultant and will be added to a list other potential improvement schemes.

In a joint statement they said: “Following recent lobbying to Roads Service regarding safety concerns around Temple Crossroads junction this news is very positive.

“The identification of this extremely busy section of road for improvements would greatly reduce the risk for motorists and pedestrians who need to cross the A24 at peak times.

“The volume of cars that travel through this major junction poses a potential danger and Roads Service giving consideration to increasing safety measures through the introduction of a roundabout will aid the prevention of accidents.”

The two said that no timescale has been given for the scheme but they have been informed by Network Development the feasibility design has been referred to a consultant for closer design.

“It is good to see that Roads Service is acting proactively regarding this junction” they said.
