Senior citizen names housing development

Newtownabbey Borough Council chose Isabel Beveridge’s suggestion ‘Glenann Court’ for the development of 21 apartments on Glengormley’s Antrim Road.

The scheme will cost a total of £2.2 million, financed by a £1.4 million grant from the Department of Social Development through the Housing Executive and £0.8 million through Clanmil Housing’s private borrowing.

Isabel chose the ‘Glenann’ title by combining “Glen” for Glengormley with “Ann” for Antrim Road.

The apartments are being built to high energy efficiency standards and have been designed to Secured by Design and Lifetime Homes standards.

This ensures added security for tenants and flexibility of adaptation if required at a later date. Features of the new building include lifts, covered car parking and a roof terrace for use by tenants.

Clanmil Housing currently owns and manages over 3,500 homes.

Senior Development Officer at Clanmil Housing, Damien Teague said he was delighted with the new name.

He commented: “I would like to thank the Senior Citizens’ Forum for their help in coming up with such a great name for our scheme .

“There were so many brilliant suggestions that it was difficult to choose but I think that Isabel has come up with the perfect name.

“Low running costs and excellent security at Glenann Court, combined with its convenient location and a sense of community, will help our tenants continue to live independently in an easy to manage home of their own, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming them to their new homes early next year.”

The scheme will provide one and two bedroom apartments for active older people, with completion due in January 2015.
