Spaces for emergency vehicles ‘vital’ at Harbour

The issue of the lack of emergency service parking adjacent to the pontoon at the Harbour was highlighted by Charlie Adjey, a member of the Portrush Raft Race Committee.

Charlie explained: “ I am acutely aware of the shortcomings of the facilities at Portrush Harbour regarding safety issues.

“Recently I have been involved with Coleraine Borough Council in helping to resolve some of the problems, and am very encouraged by their attitude, especially to disabled access to the pontoon.

“Trying to get a stretcher from the Lifeboat moored at the pontoon, up the ramp and onto the quay is incredibly difficult given the nature of the ramp and requires serious manpower, never mind discomfort to the patient.”

Charlie called for the marking off of two or three parking spaces for use of emergency service vehicles only. “I believe that this is a serious issue which could save lives” he said.

A Council spokesperson said: “Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council welcome further discussion on this issue with representatives of Portrush RNLI.

“Council wholeheartedly recognise the importance of access by emergency services to fulfill their role during any RNLI rescues.”
