Suicide support group holds first meeting

A NEW initiative has been set up in Larne to help people who have been affected by the loss of a loved one through suicide.

The first meeting of the Larne Bereaved by Suicide Group took place on Tuesday, September 13, and will continue to run on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm for 11 weeks in Larne Elim Church, Victoria Road.

The project - which was put in place by the Northern Trust in recognition of the devastating effect suicide can have on family members and friends - has been developed through the Northern Area Promoting Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Steering Group.

The group aims to generate awareness of the wide range of support organisations and individual counselling services that people can turn to if they have been bereaved by suicide.

Funding for the project was secured by the PIPS Larne group from the Public Health Agency. The group has also received funding through Big Lottery Funds Awards For All Programme to hold PIPS lifeguard suicide prevention programme training days in Larne.

The training sessions are free and are targeted at everyone within the community and surrounding area. The next session will be held on Saturday at Larne Elim Church. For further information or to book a place, contact 07530797716.
