Police were in attendance in the Main Street area of Cushendun following the discovery of a suspicious object in the area yesterday (Saturday).

It was later declared a hoax.

She said: “Every home on Main Street in Cushendun had to be evacuated yesterday (Saturday) following this security alert. It is a total disgrace and those behind have no support in the community.

“It is a very busy time of year for Cushendun and we are working hard to bring people into the area – not push them out. Yesterday’s action was exactly what we neither need nor want.

“I urge anyone with information about this to contact the police.”

Councillor Darryl Wilson also posted on his Facebook site: “Disappointed to learn that there is a security alert in Cushendun during what is usually a very busy time of year for the town. Such behaviour is not welcome within our Borough, actions like these harm our area’s tourism potential and disrupt the lives of locals and visitors alike.”
