Swann praises Corkey Road scheme

Robin Swann MLA, Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and his party’s candidate for Westminster for North Antrim has praised the proposed new cycle and footway scheme at Corkey Road, south of Loughgiel, “as a sensible project which will boost health and safety for the entire community”.

Assemblyman Swann, who is UUP Chief Whip and Chairman of the Stormont Employment and Learning Committee, was speaking as his party colleague and Transport Minister Danny Kennedy MLA announced that work on a £264,000 cycle and footway scheme on the C84 Corkey Road has begun.

While Minister Kennedy’s Department’s resource budget for activities such as routine maintenance is severely reduced, funding for this scheme is from the capital budget for major projects and new road schemes which is less affected by the current pressures.

Minister Kennedy said: “This scheme will provide around 1km of cycle and footways. It will bring particular benefits to cyclists and pedestrian by linking the hamlets of Ben Vista and Rockend, including the local St Anne’s Primary School in Corkey.

“I am committed to developing a cycling culture in Northern Ireland where people will have a choice on how they travel, how they get to work, how they get to the shops and how they spend some of their leisure time.

“This investment will enhance that opportunity for the local community in Corkey and Loughgiel, and in the surrounding area,’’ said Minister Kennedy.

Assemblyman Swann added: “This much-needed project will greatly enhance the public’s health and safety in that locality and is further proof of the Ulster Unionist Party delivering the people of North Antrim.”
