Irish language party cost £17k

THE first year birthday party for an initiative to get as many people as possible speaking Irish by 2015 cost £17k, it’s been revealed.

The Líofa (fluent) Party took place in Custom House Square in Belfast last September and featured performances from a range of artists including renowned Dungiven harpist Nodlaig Brolly.

The event was hosted by the state television and radio presenter Lynette Fay.

Further entertainment was provided by Goitse, JJ Ó Dochartaigh, Cór Loch Lao, Ariel Killick, Giggles the clown and the Fanzini Brother.

Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín revealed that £17,972 was spent on the party and that a Business Case for the Líofa event was published on the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) website in January 2013.
