DISCOVER your hidden heritage this summer at Beaghmore Stone Circles, Ardboe Cross and Tullaghoge Fort.

Cookstown Tourist Centre are organising a series of events over the summer months promoting the range of heritage monuments throughout the District highlighting their historically significance.

Beaghmore Stone Circles

The first event takes place on Thursday 21st June at Beaghmore Stone Circles from 6pm – 8.30pm. This event will take place in association with NIEA’s Archaeology Days 2012 which coincides with the longest day of the year (solstice). Meet with an archaeologist and a Bronze Age re-enactor who will talk about these enigmatic stones and the role they may have played in our ancestor’s way of life. There might also be the opportunity to survey the bog and, weather permitting partake in solar observing.

This tour will end at the An Creagan Visitor centre for an evening of storytelling by Declan Forde and supper served in the centre’s restaurant. You will have time to browse through the exhibition and craft shop before making your journey back to the Burnavon.

The coach departs from the Burnavon Theatre at 6pm returning at 8.30pm. This coach service will transport you to the stone circles and then onto An Creagan Visitor Centre. Ardboe Cross

Come and discover the ancient site of Ardboe Cross and St Colman’s Abbey on Saturday 30th June from 6pm – 8.30pm. Hear a reading of the Ancient High Cross, the finest example in Ulster, of figure carving, featuring 22 panels depicting Biblical Scenes. Explore St Colman’s Abbey and listen to tales surrounding this historic site.

Finish your evening with a delicious eel supper served in Kinturk Cultural Centre on the shores of Lough Neagh while enjoying traditional Irish music accompanied by Irish dancers. Tullaghoge Fort

On Saturday 21st July why not come along and hear about 16th Century life in Tyrone in the company of Hugh O’Neill. Interact with Hugh O’Neill and gain an insight into what it was like to live in Ireland over 400 years ago with the characters from the living history department in Armagh.

Enjoy a traditional supper accompanied by pressed apple juice and listen to tales told by storyteller Declan Forde. This Living History Tour will take place at Tullaghoge Fort on Saturday 21st July.
