Vandalism at club as season due to start

Windows were broken at the score box and the same building was subject to an arson attempt. Empty bottles of alcohol were left at the scene by the teenagers who also caused damage to cricket covers.

It comes just days before the cricket season is due to get underway.

The ‘MAIL’ understands the names of some of the individuals suspected of carrying out the damage have been passed on to police.

Police in Lurgan are appealing for information after a report of criminal damage in the Pollock Drive area.

Sometime between midnight on Sunday, April 20 and 11am on Tuesday, April 22, it was reported that damage was caused to a score box in the area. Cricket covers are also believed to have been damaged and enquiries are continuing.

Police would ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact them on the new non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

UUP candidate Aaron Carson commented: “As a member of Lurgan Rugby and Cricket Club I was very saddened to hear of this 
terrible act.

“There are many committed members at the club working hard to improve the facilities and I am shocked that vandals would hold back this progress.

“This now means that the score box will have to be fixed again just a year after refurbishing work was carried out by club members.

“This is a disgrace that this could happen, especially at the start of a new cricket season. I appeal that if anyone noticed anything suspicious in the area on Monday evening to please get in touch with Lurgan PSNI so these mindless vandals are stopped.”
