Protect your home and possessions this summer

OFTEC, which represents the domestic oil heating and cooking industry in Northern Ireland, has issued advice to Ballymoney and Ballycastle householders on how to protect their homes and possessions as they head off on holidays this summer.

David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager said: “Empty homes during the summer holidays can be seen as easy targets for thieves. It’s important to take precautionary steps to ensure that your home is properly secured before you leave. These steps are often cheap and easy to put in place, ranging from securing your oil tank to prevent theft to not hiding spare keys outside!”

OFTEC recommends these tips to keep your house safe whilst you’re away:

It may seem obvious, but check all doors and windows are secured. Some house insurances don’t compensate for theft if the house was not locked correctly.

Create the impression you’re still home. Piles of mail in the letterbox, empty driveways and dark rooms are indicators of an empty house. We recommend having letters held at the post office and lights on timers to help ward off intruders.

If you are staying away for a longer period of time, agree with a neighbour to keep a watch on the house or to park in your driveway.

Oil theft is an increasing occurrence. Secure your oil tank. Most tanks can be locked at the inspection cover or a lockable filler cap can be fitted to existing oil tanks. You might also plant shrubs or use fence panels to hide your oil tank, however, make sure any screening is a minimum distance away from the tank so it doesn’t cause a fire hazard.

Check the fuel levels in your oil tank immediately before and after your holiday for any drop in volume that may indicate theft or a leak.

Turn everything off at the socket. All appliances except for your fridge/freezer should be turned off at the wall. This will reduce the risk of fires and save money bills.

Don’t broadcast your absence. In this social media age it can be tempting to post your departure and holiday snaps on Facebook and Twitter. However, some thieves are using this information to their advantage.

If you are concerned about your oil tank and or fuel security contact your local registered technician for advice.
