Coleraine edge out plucky Glebe

COLERAINE hit the goal trail on Saturday again notching up five goals to book their spot in the third round of the Co-Operative Insurance Cup.The Bannsiders saw off a resolute Glebe Rangers side at a rain lashed Riada Stadium.

Goals from Darren Boyce (2) and David Scullion looked to have sealed the win for Coleraine 13 minutes in to the second half.

But two goals for the hosts in as many minutes just after the hour mark seemingly blew the tie wide open and raised Glebe's hopes of causing an upset.

The visitors hit back though scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to secure the win and progress to the next round.

Paul Brown should have put Coleraine in front with two minutes on the clock, but the striker couldn't keep his header down from Stephen Carson's corner.

The Bannsiders broke the deadlock six minutes later from another Carson corner. This time Darren Boyce headed home at the back post from close range.

Stuart Moore's long throw's were causing problems in the squally conditions, with the Coleraine defence twice having to clear from under their posts in the opening 20 minutes.

Brown just failed to make contact with a Carson cross on the half hour after Boyce's clever dummy had set him up.

Coleraine doubled their advantage 10 minutes in to the second half as David Scullion lashed the ball home after a clever reverse pass from Brown on the edge of the box.

Two became three on 58 minutes as Gareth Harkin's corner was headed goal wards by Brown, flicking off Boyce on its way in to the net.

The game looked to be petering out when Glebe were handed a lifeline on 65 minutes.

Aaron Canning's weak back pass allowed the lively Tommy Elder to run clear and slot the ball past the advancing Davey O'Hare.

And two minutes later the game was turned on its head as Ricky Nicholl lost his marker and powered home a great header from Mooney's cross.

The hosts were buoyed by their two-goal salvo but they couldn't find the crucial third.

And in the closing minutes Coleraine extended their lead. It was that man Carson who did the damage again as his cross from the left was slotted home by Scullion on 83.
