McCarter and Hunter on fire

IRELAND secured a fairly comfortable four wicket win over Namibia in the first round of the Plate Championship in the Under 19 World Cup, in Brisbane, this morning.

Gloucestershire’s Graeme McCarter was the bowling hero claiming 4 for 32, while there wickets apiece for Peter Chase, Tyrone Kane, Adam Coughlan and George Dockrell - the latter conceding just 8 runs in his ten over spell as Namibia totalled 128 for 9.

Chris Coombe (28), Jason Davidson (24), and Wian van Vuuren were the only Namibian batsmen to make any sort of an impression.

Ireland lost Robin Kelly in the first over but Donemana’s Ryan Hunter’s 42 from 37 balls (3 fours, 2 sixes) meant Ireland were always in control.

Jason van der Merwe made 28 as Ireland won by four wickets with 25.3 overs to spare.

Andy McBrine missed the game because of a finger injury, and Ireland will hope he is fit enough as they face Sri Lanka in the semi-final of the Plate on Wednesday.
