Rangers snap up goalkeeper Neeson

As his squad building continues, Gary Haveron is delighted to have procured the services of goalkeeper Brian Neeson - and that’s a move that will ensure there’s a fierce battle in prospect for the No.1 jersey at Taylor’s Avenue when the new season gets under way.

“Brian had been playing with Knockbreda and, although he’s not very big in stature, he’s a terrific goalkeeper and is an especially good shot-stopper.

“I’m very, very pleased that he has come on board with Carrick Rangers,” said the manager.

“He’s 24 years old and plays Gaelic football for Antrim and the St John’s club, but he doesn’t play in goal for them. He’s a very accomplished player in their forward line.

“But he is a really good goalkeeper in football and was one of the key reason why Knockbreda did so well last season in Championship 1.

“Working as a fitness instructor, he is renowned for kicking the ball a country mile and, again because of the fielding in Gaelic, he is very, very good at coming for the high balls and claiming him for himself.

“A club really does need two quality goalkeepers on the books and I anticipate a terrific battle between him and Simon Steele for the number one shirt.

“Simon is recognised also as a class act and he did really well for us in the league run-in.

“I’m looking forward to the friendly rivalry between the pair.

“We are still talking to a few other players, always trying to boost the strength of the squad and add the desired quality to the playing staff,” assured confident Haveron, who has news of some friendly fixtures to add to the headline Glens fixture already announced for Tuesday, July 29.

“We will be lining out against a Crusaders side on July 26, that a mixture of first team and younger players because they have European commitments around that time.

“There’s a match against Islandmagee on August 2, a testimonial game for Michael Moore, who played for over 10 years between the two clubs.

“And we will have matches also against Larne Tech. Old Boys and Queen’s University” added the Carrick manager.s
