Seven up for goal crazy Olympic

COOKSTOWN Olympic played hosts to Wakehurst Strollers last Saturday on a very wet Beechway pitch and took the victory with a seven one score line.

Olympic opened the scoring after 5 minutes when a Mark Loughran through ball saw Richard McMenemy drill it past the keeper. The lead was doubled 7 minutes later as Darren McCabe split the Wakehurst defence with a pass that Richard McMenemy took around the keeper to score.

Wakehurst then pulled a goal back after 21 minutes to give Olympic a wakeup call and indeed they could have been level 4 minutes later only for a great save from Olympic keeper Jamie O’Neill. The third goal did come for Olympic after 25 minutes from a corner that was cleared to Mark Meenan and he squared to allow Dean Campbell time to turn and shoot.

The second half saw the steady rain further deteriorate the pitch but Olympic scored their fourth on 52 minutes when Mark Loughran pounced on a mix up between keeper and defender and stroked the ball into the net.

Three minutes later and it was five when Richard McMenemy squared to Mark Loughran and his 18 yard shot was deflected past the keeper.

Number six came after 65 minutes as Michael O’Hare back heeled to Liam Hoy in the box and he thumped it home. With four minutes left Mark Meenan broke down the right and pulled the ball back to see Richard McMenemy complete his hat trick with a sweet strike.

Team: J O’Neill, D Campbell, D McCabe, L Mullan, L Mitchell, M Meenan, L Hoy, C O’Hare, R Devlin, R McMenemy and M Loughran. Subs M O’Hare, P McVey, S O’Hare, J Gilmore and R Scullion. Cookstown Olympic want to wish Stephen O’Hare a speedy recover from the nasty head wound that he received at the end of last week’s match. Next Saturday Cookstown Olympic are down to play their last home match of the season as they host Ballyclare North End.
