Sky Blues News

ON Wednesday Sky Blues U11s travelled to Coleraine Showgrounds for their cup final against Dungiven.

Buoyed by the large, vocal travelling support, the young Blues started brightly and on 3 minutes a pacey run and excellent cross from Caolan Tohill found Aiden McCluskey who chipped in a great ball for Conleth McGuckian to slot home at the back post. The strong breeze made passing difficult.

Finn Diamond and Aiden McCluskey were working tirelessly for Sky Blues in midfield but apart from a couple of Sky Blues corners with Johnny McErlain heading narrowly wide from the second which was well delivered by Conleth McGuckian, the Blues were unable to extend their 1-0 lead. Dungiven also pressed on several occasions but were kept out by the Sky Blues well organised defence and a brilliant Thomas Shea Maynes tackle. Sky Blues started the second half against the breeze but with their solid defence feeding the midfield they were able to force Dungiven back into their own half. On 42 minutes Eoghan Hawe put Ethan Doherty through on goal but he shot narrowly over.

The pressure paid off on 47 minutes when following a great tackle and pass by Finn Diamond, the superb Eoghan Hawe put a ball over the top for Ethan Doherty who ran in on goal and chipped the advancing keeper to put the Blues 2-0 up.

Five minutes later a Conleth McGuckian corner was well met by Pat Shivers but his glancing header was just wide. Dungiven were also pressing but were kept out by good covering tackles by Shea McSorley and Thomas Shea Maynes and clearances by Pat Shivers and Johnny McErlain.

Sky Blues then saved the best to last with a superb sweeping move started by Shea McSorley who intercepted the ball in defence and quickly found Finn Diamond on the left side of midfield. Finn swept the ball on to Caolan Tohill who cut in from the left wing and crossed for Conleth McGuckian to finish coolly at the back post to put Sky Blues 3-0 up. Sky Blues substitutes : Adam Canavan, Rhys Walsh. On 56 minutes Dungiven put through a testing ball which was well met by Ewan Smyth in goal to preserve the clean sheet and see out the 3-0 win.

This was a fantastic team performance and an excellent end to a very successful season for the U11s. A big thank you to all the family members and friends who attended the match and supported the team so well. Man Of The Match : Eoghan Hawe
