Taylor’s Portstewart slip up at Banbridge Town

A 2-0 drubbing at Banbridge Town on Saturday was not the result Ports boss Gary Taylor was hoping for.

The match was barely four minutes old when Banbridge won a corner, a bicycle kick from Downey at the back post saw the hosts taking an early lead.

With 19 minutes on the clock, Banbridge added a second, again from a corner. Moffatt ran late across the box to meet the whipped cross and cushion it into the net.

At the other end the Ports had a chance when winger Hansen pulled the ball back for O’Neill who had the goal at his mercy, only for a sliding block by Greene to deny the shot.

As the half drew to a close, Portstewart were awarded a penalty when a dangerous run from full-back Ryan McAllister caused trouble before he was dragged down in the box.

The resulting spot kick taken by Matt Hynds thumped off the cross bar and was cleared.

After that the Ports had a number of chances but the steadfast Town defence held firm to take the spoils.

Not the result Ports boss Gary Taylor was hoping for after his side had recorded two good derby wins.

“We never got started, and by the time we did we found ourselves 2-0 down.

“The penalty miss just summed up our day.

“I think if we had scored the penalty we could have at least got a draw out of the game,” admitted the Ports boss.

Portstewart have no fixture this week due to North West and Steele and Sons Cups, so the focus is on the next tie away to Sport and Leisure.

“The break will give the likes of Ryan Doherty and Steven O’Neill another week to get themselves right. Steven has a hamstring strain and Ryan is very close to being back again.

“I am disappointed with Saturday, they scored two goals from two corners, one is excusable, but two isn’t, we just didn’t pick up our men.

“Banbridge are a decent side, they haven’t been conceding goals, and you could see from Saturday that they are well drilled. We need to get focused again for our next tie, and hope that we can eliminate those little errors,” said Taylor.
