United win derby

NEWBUILDINGS United produced a comfortable 3-1 home succes over North West neighbours Roe Rovers, even though they found themselves a goal behind inside five minutes, on Saturday.

A free kick into the Newbuildings box saw Conor Mullan knock the ball down to Stephen Harley and he made no mistake firing home from a tight angle.

This spurred the home side into action and their first chance fell to Robinson who shot over from just inside the box.

United drew level shortly after when Stephen Wallace laid the ball to Ferguson whose shot from the edge of the box struck the bar and rebounded to the alert Stephen Curry who slammed the ball home from close range.

The Waterside men continued to dominate possession but failing to find that bit of quality in the final third.

The home side took the lead on 30 minutes when a Curry corner saw Nicell’s header cleared off the line but Dean Curry was on hand to score from six yards out.

Newbuildings continued in the second half where they had left off in the first, controlling the game and almost extended their lead when Ferguson struck the bar for the second time in the match with a long range effort.

Wallace produced a good run and shot which Gregory O’Brien did well to save and the Limavady keeper did even better when he blocked Trevor McSparron’s follow up effort.

The home side eventually grabbed their third to seal the three points when good work on the left by McSparron saw him deliver a great cross to the back post where Stephen Curry was on hand to head home for his second of the game.

Roe Rovers to their credit kept plugging away but any threats were dealt with by the Newbuildings centre-half pairing of Curry and Peter Blair resulting in Thompson in the home goal having not one save to make.

The first team will travel to Dungiven in the League Cup this week while the Reserves will entertain Lincoln Courts in the league.
