GOLF: Hole-in-ones for Mary and Eoin

FOUR more turkeys were up for grabs in Ballycastle over the weekend and on Saturday it was Steven Devlin who got the Section One bird with a fine 37 points over the sixteen holes.

He finished just ahead of the Quiet Man, Colm Hendrie (7) who had birdies at the 3rd, 9th and 17th holes on his way to 36 points and Paul Surgenor who also scored 36.

Michael Hegarty (18) was victorious in Section 2 having the day’s highest score of 38 points, ahead of the veteran Frank Smyth on 37 and another veteran Ivor Torrens who also had 37 off his reduced handicap of 12.

Gerard Dowds (13) finally bagged his Christmas dinner on Sunday having come close on a couple of previous outings. His total of 37 took him home two shots clear of James McNeill (13) who matched his father-in-law’s second place on Saturday.

In Section Two it was the Fairheader Garth Beckett (16) who clocked up 36 points on his meter and pushed his fellow Fairheader Michael Dallat (17) into second place.

For Michael it was his second runner-up spot of the week having been in the same spot in the Wednesday Open which was won by Adam McIntyre of Ballyclare with Martin Morgan picking up third place.

For two members it was a weekend to remember and in particular the tenth hole. On Friday in the Ladies Competition Mary Duffin had her first ever Hole-in-One at the tenth and on Sunday Eoin Donnelly matched that feat with his ace at the same hole. It is understood that the bar takings were boosted considerably as the duo treated their fellow competitors to the customary celebration of their success!
