Andy and Leslie rescue Lisburn in the Ulster Cup

Andy Neill and Leslie Murdock made fantastic comebacks to give Lisburn some hope after the Ulster Cup home match against Warrenpoint.

After nine holes Lisburn were down in four matches and the situation looked ‘critical’ for Neil Patton’s team.

In the top match Ian Suffern was four ahead after six holes but lost the next three to turn one up. He played steadily on the back nine and went on to win by 3&1.

A long putt for a birdie two at the sixth helped Brian Houston into a four hole lead at the turn. He went on to win by 5 & 4.

Iain Gillespie holed a long putt for a birdie three at the ninth to turn one down. He was always in arrears and lost 15 and 16 to go down 3 & 2.

Brian Rainey had a one hole advantage at the turn and extended his lead to win by 3 & 2.

Andy Neill was one down after nine holes but all square after winning the 12th. He was one down after 15 but won 16 and 17.

His shot to the final green finished twenty feet from the flag and his par three secured a surprising victory by two holes.

Les Murdock was two behind at the turn and proceeded to go four down with six to play. He won four of the next five holes to square the match.

He pulled his tee shot into the bunker at the 18th and could only hack the ball on to the green. His putt from twenty feet just slid past but it was sufficient to secure a vital half.

In the final match Keith McCrum was up against an excellent putter in Warrenpoint’s Damien Digney. He was three down at the turn but held on to reduce the arrears to a 4 & 3 defeat.

The return match at Warrenpoint is next Sunday with Lisburn holding a lead of two points and six holes.

Rossmore Cup

Lisburn’s Rossmore Cup team suffered a 3 – 1 defeat in the home match to Killymoon. Paul Smyth and Des Kerr won 16 and 17 to register Lisburn’s only win. Robert Campbell and Colin Hill were unfortunate to lose their match to a birdie two at the final hole.

All-Ireland Mixed

Foursomes

Lisburn was one of the last teams to play at Dunmurry and had to put up with very wet conditions. Amy Jeffers and Lewis Patmore led the team with an excellent score of 74½. It was not sufficient to scrape into the top four.
