McElroy makes ‘cut’ at NI Open

Dermot McElroy is looking forward to furthering his golfing career in the company of professional golfers this weekend.

The Ballymena player has made the ‘cut’ at the Northern Ireland Open Challenge event at Galgorm Castle with something to spare and will now compete in the final two rounds on Saturday and Sunday.

Dermot followed up a sparkling opening round of 67 with a solid second round of 70 to be five under par for the tournament.

He is still several shots adrift of the leading competitors but well clear of the ‘cut’ which is expected to be at -1.

McElroy, won the Northern Ireland Open Strokeplay Championship at Galgorm in July to book his place in the field this week and the Ballymena native admitted that the win had given him a boost of confidence coming into the tournament.

“It’s fantastic to perform well in my home town, great crowds, super can’t ask for much more.

“All my family were following, it was good fun,” said the 20-year-old.
