Philip’s 10 foot tester seals a win in Mazda Trophy

The summer-like conditions on Saturday led to over 20 competitors scoring below their handicaps in the Lindsay Mazda Trophy at Lisburn GC.

The course was in excellent condition for this very popular event.

Philip Stewart (19) has been on the verge of playing a good round for some weeks. Last Saturday he had 17 points after eight holes but drove into the trees and failed to add to his total for the front nine.

He stormed round the back nine in 40, holing from ten feet on the final green, for 24 points and a total of 41.

He finished one point ahead of four competitors: Joshua Clarke (11), Richard McDermott (6), Ivan Leathem (8) and Stephen Shaw (5). Joshua was awarded second place ahead of Richard on count-back.

Five competitors shot rounds of 74 for 34 gross points: Stephen Shaw, Richard McDermott, Ivan Leathem, Kyle Patton and Norman McNellis. Stephen and Richard both played the back nine in 35 but Stephen finished with a birdie two to win the gross prize on the last six holes.

Matt Lyness had three twos and just failed to hole his putt on the final green for a fourth.
